Carol Rae is an artist who works in many mediums. Printmaking, encaustics, costume design, and bead work, to name a few. She received her art education from California College of Arts and Crafts, Western Washington State University, Emily Carr College of Art and Design, and the school of hard knocks.
She has designed costumes for many years in Victoria for Theatre Inconnu , Kaleidoscope Theatre, and the Pumphouse Theatre in Calgary. Mostly working on a shoestring budget has been a challenge overcome by low cost creative innovations. Making a purse out of a sow’s ear is her specialty.
She has taught classes for many years all over B.C., Washington State and at Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts (MISSA) and enjoyed being on the MISSA board for 12 years. And she has been artist in residence at several schools, including Edward Milne School in Sooke, B.C.
A few of her highlights include two solo shows, “Fusion VooDoo” show and her linocuts based on her costume designs, both at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, She has collaborated with many artists of all genres over the years including “Traps”, a dance theatre production based on her paintings and prints with choreographer, Lynda Raino, artists Miles Lowry and David Ferguson, and original music composed by Michael Lord. She was thrilled to be invited to Calgary to make painted costumes and sets for “The Man Who Came to Dinner” at the Pumphouse Theatre. She has also collaborated with poet, Linda Rogers, combining her collages with poetry and presenting them as a show titled “Fresh”on banners at the Greater Victoria Community Arts Council Gallery.
